Since or Until Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 6, 2025

The short version

  • We collect account info, the counters you create, and standard web analytics data (IP, browser, referrer).
  • We use Google Analytics and display ads through Google AdSense — both set their own cookies.
  • We do not sell your personal information.
  • We may share anonymized, aggregated usage statistics with advertisers and partners.
  • You can request access to or deletion of your data at any time.

1. Who we are

Since or Until is a web service available at www.sinceoruntil.com that lets you create, share, and track elapsed-time counters ("counters"). References to "we," "our," or "us" mean the operator of this service.

2. Information we collect

Account information

When you register: username, optional display name, email address, and a one-way hash of your password (we never store your password in plain text). We record your IP address at registration and at each subsequent login for security purposes.

Counter data

The titles, start dates, style preferences, vanity URLs, and privacy settings of each counter you create. Public counters and their titles are visible to anyone on the internet. We record your IP address when you create a counter for abuse-prevention purposes.

Usage data

Each time a counter page is viewed, we automatically record: IP address, browser and device information (user-agent string), the URL you came from (HTTP Referer), and a timestamp. This data is used for analytics, fraud prevention, and informing our advertising and business partners in aggregated, de-identified form.

Communications

Messages you send through our contact form, including your name, email, and message content.

Automatically via third parties

Google Analytics and Google AdSense collect additional data about your interactions with our site, including session duration, pages visited, general location (derived from IP), device type, and browsing behavior used for ad personalization. This is governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

3. How we use your information

  • To operate, maintain, and improve the service.
  • To verify your identity and keep your account secure.
  • To detect and prevent abuse, spam, and unauthorized access (IP-based analysis).
  • To send transactional emails: email verification, password reset, and account notifications.
  • To send product updates, newsletters, or promotional emails — only to users who have opted in. You can unsubscribe at any time via the link in any such email or by contacting us.
  • To display personalized or contextual ads via Google AdSense.
  • To analyze usage patterns and improve the service — often using aggregated and anonymized data.
  • To produce aggregated, non-personally-identifiable metrics (e.g., total page views, top countries, device breakdown) that we may share with advertisers, partners, or potential investors.
  • To showcase public counters as representative examples in our marketing and promotional materials.

4. Information sharing

We do not sell your personal information.

We may share information in the following circumstances:

  • Google: We use Google Analytics, Google AdSense, and Google Search Console. Data shared with Google is subject to Google's Privacy Policy. You can opt out of Google Analytics at tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
  • Service providers: Hosting, email delivery, and other infrastructure partners who process data on our behalf under confidentiality obligations.
  • Aggregated data: Non-personally-identifiable statistics (traffic volumes, device mix, geographic distribution, popular content categories) may be shared with current or prospective advertising and business partners.
  • Legal obligations: We may disclose information when required by law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of Since or Until or others.
  • Business transfers: In connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your data may be transferred to the acquiring entity.

5. Cookies

We use the following types of cookies:

  • Session cookies: Required for login and CSRF protection. Expire when you close your browser or after your session ends.
  • Google Analytics cookies: Track site usage. See Google's documentation or opt out via the link above.
  • Google AdSense cookies: Used to serve and personalize advertisements.

You can disable cookies through your browser settings. Disabling session cookies will prevent you from logging in.

6. Public content

Counters you set to "Public" are visible to anyone on the internet, including search engines. Their titles, elapsed times, and URLs may be indexed, cached, or reproduced by third parties. We may feature public counters as examples in our promotional materials. Setting a counter to "Private" restricts visibility to your account only; "Shared" makes it accessible only via direct link.

7. Data retention

  • Account data is retained while your account is active and for a reasonable period after deletion to satisfy legal and backup obligations.
  • View and usage logs may be retained indefinitely in raw or aggregated form for analytics purposes.
  • Database backups may persist for up to 90 days after a deletion request.

8. Your rights

All users

  • Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Request deletion of your account and associated personal data (note: aggregated or anonymized data derived from your activity may be retained).
  • Opt out of marketing or promotional emails at any time.
